Mentoring Undergraduates Program

What is MentorUP?

The Mentoring Undergraduates Program (MentorUP) provides a mentorship network for incoming chemistry undergraduate students to assist them as they transition to life at NC State. Mentors will engage with, and share resources and advice with incoming undergraduates in order to increase the retention of students in the field, especially those who belong to historically underrepresented groups in STEM, including women, first generation, and Black, Indigenous, People of Color [BIPOC].

Why should I become a mentor?

There are many reasons to become a mentor. It’s an opportunity to share all that you have learned so far during your educational journey and provide guidance, encouragement, and support to less experienced students. Sharing with others can provide a sense of fulfillment and growth. Mentoring also benefits the mentor by providing opportunities to develop communication and leadership skills. You will broaden your own network by working with other mentors as well as broaden your perspective by interacting with people from diverse backgrounds. The MentorUP program will provide opportunities to receive recognition for your efforts and enhance your CV. Developing these soft skills will be critical as you move toward your future career goals.

Why should I become a mentee?

Joining the program as a mentee will provide you with a community of mentors and peers to who you can reach out for support and guidance. The interest group you choose to join will help you to establish a sense of belonging and community in the chemistry department. Your mentors are here to provide encouragement and advice, answer questions that you have, and direct you to people or resources that can help you

Who can be a mentor?

Any graduate student or declared chemistry major in their third or fourth year in the program can sign up to be a mentor. If you take on this role, we will provide you with training and support to give you the resources needed to cultivate a positive growth experience for you and your mentee.

Any incoming freshman or sophomore chemistry major is welcome to sign up for the program.

What is not expected of a mentor?

It is not your responsibility as a mentor to provide tutoring, academic advice or mental health counseling. If one of your mentees has a serious need, please direct them to the appropriate resources or reach out to one of the MentorUP contacts. We will provide you with guidance and resources that you can pass on to your mentees.

Mentor Expectations

  • Provide guidance, support and encouragement
  • Provide a safe and welcoming environment for students from all identities, racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds
  • Act as a positive role model and treat all students with respect and dignity. Encourage that all members do the same for each other
  • Maintain a friendly but professional relationship will all students in the group
  • Practice active listening and give all students a platform to speak and share their experiences without judgment or shaming
  • Communicate with your group regularly through Slack and organize 1-2 Zoom or in-person meetings per semester
