About the Seminar:

Title:

A search for new photophysics and photochemistry with metal complexes

Abstract:

This talk will focus on three different topics. In the first part, I will present recent results obtained by Mirjam Schreier and Xingwei Guo on photo-triggered hydrogen atom transfer (photo-HAT) between an iridium hydride complex and olefins.1 Whilst photoinduced electron transfer (PET) is very common for transition metal complexes, photo-HAT seems very rare.

In the second part, I will talk about how Christoph Kerzig used a tris(cyclometalated) iridium(III) complex to generate solvated electrons by consecutive excitation with two laser pulses,2 and how he then used the solvated electrons to do unusual photochemistry.3

In the final part, I will tell about our latest adventures in the development of molybdenum(0) diisocyanide complexes as Earth-abundant analogs of well-known ruthenium(II) polypyridines.4 Specifically, I will focus on Jakob Bilger’s work on a deep red emitter, and how he performed sensitized triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion with that complex, to drive a blue light dependent chemical reaction with red excitation.5

About the speaker:

Oliver S. Wenger received a Ph. D. degree from the University of Berne (Switzerland) in 2002 after work with Hans U. Güdel. Following postdoctoral stays at Caltech (with Harry B. Gray, 2002-2004) and University of Strasbourg (with Jean-Pierre Sauvage, 2004-2006), he became assistant professor at University of Geneva in 2006. In 2009, he moved to the University of Göttingen (Germany) as associate professor. He returned to Switzerland in 2012 to the University of Basel (Switzerland), where he was promoted to full professor in 2018.
