Facilities and Research Centers
The Department of Chemistry and NC State boasts a multitude of world-class facilities that enable the advancement of the study of chemical matter of a variety of scales, sizes and types.
Biological Core Facility (BioCore)
The BioCore facility provides a range of equipment and instrumentation to researchers across campus to facilitate the preparation and study of biological molecules. Highlights include BSL2-certified bacterial and cell culture facilities, robotic liquid handling, microplate readers, phosphorimaging and automated protein purification systems.
Electronics Instrument Shop
The Electronics Instrument Shop maintains and supports all laboratory equipment and computers in the chemistry department.
Imaging and Kinetics Spectroscopy Laboratory (IMAKS)
IMAKS provides cutting edge instrumentation for vibrational spectroscopy, optical microscopy, and time-resolved emission and transient absorption spectroscopy. More info can be found here.
Molecular Education, Technology and Research Innovation Center (METRIC)
The Molecular Education, Technology and Research Innovation Center (METRIC) provides NC State researchers and university partners with world-class, state-of-the-art measurement science facilities across four buildings throughout campus, encompassing three key molecular characterization technologies: mass spectrometry, magnetic resonance (NMR and EPR) and x-ray crystallography (small molecule and macromolecular). METRIC is primarily located in Dabney Hall and Polk Hall, with satellite facilities in the Molecular Toxicology Building and Partners III on Centennial Campus.
Other NC State Facilities
Analytical Instrumentation Facility (AIF)
The AIF specializes in the characterization of materials using state-of-the-art scanning and transmission electron microscopes, X-ray scattering and spectroscopy instruments, time-of-flight mass spectrometry, scanning probe microscopy, nanoindentation and extensive sample preparation facilities.
Cellular and Molecular Imaging Facility
The CMIF provides access to advanced imaging equipment. The facility contains a number of state-of-the-art light microscopes, including a Zeiss LSM 880 confocal system with Airyscan and a Zeiss Z.1 lightsheet microscope.
Comparative Medicine Institute Facilities
The mission of the Comparative Medicine Institute (CMI) is to develop, foster, and assist interdisciplinary teams focused on translating basic research and scientific discovery into clinical/societal applications to improve the health of animals and humans.
Genomic Sciences Laboratory (GSL)
The GSL enables discovery in the biological sciences by providing researchers and students with the necessary cutting-edge equipment and infrastructure required to conduct advanced genomics research.
High-Performance Computing (HPC)
The High-Performance Computing (HPC) core facility is NC State’s central computing resource designed to help researchers solve complex and computationally intensive problems.
Nanofabrication Facility
The Nanofabrication Facility provides users with a broad range of nanofabrication capabilities and services to support a diverse set of projects.
