Research Areas
Chemists hold the keys to solving big problems that matter to us all, like clean air, water and energy and cures for diseases. Our department is doing world-changing work in all of these areas and more.
Our Research
In terms of fundamental chemistry, we are interested in predicting the properties and behavior of chemical matter, in addition to probing the basis of chemical reactivity and catalysis. In terms of applied chemistry, our research spans the synthesis and discovery of new biologically active compounds, the use of chemical principles to describe and analyze the molecular basis of disease and the structure and function of macromolecules, probing and manipulating biological catalysts, and the design and application of novel materials for harvesting energy. These applied research areas align strongly with the NC State mission themes of human well-being, energy and the environment.
