Iridium Complexes for the Activation and Functionalization of Ethers and Hydrocarbons

Abstract:

Nature provides feedstock chemicals in an array of oxidation states, from reduced hydrocarbons to complex, stereochemically-rich oxygenated carbohydrates. The efficient utilization of such materials as organic building blocks relies on the availability of selective methods for their conversion. Our group is addressing this challenge through the development of new catalysts We have developed dipyridylarylmethane derivatives as ligands for sp3 C-H borylation of alkanes, and show that bis(phosphine)iridium complexes serve as tunable catalysts for the hydrosilylative cleavage of alkyl ethers.

Research:

The aim of the Schley research group is the application of organometallic chemistry to unmask latent reactivity in organic substrates. Our goal is to meet the challenge of enabling new oxidative, catalytic transformations of C-H bonds by making use of unconventional activation strategies informed by our understanding of bonding and mechanism in transition metal chemistry.
