Chemistry Outreach

Chemistry and Biological Sciences collaborated during the "Partnering for the Advancement of Science Education and Learning" (PASEL) program, where NC State volunteers mentor 20-30 3-5 graders in the design, execution, and presentation of science fair projects.

Imagine simple fruits running a clock! Ethan and the 4th Graders put their creativity and scientific skills to work—transforming simple fruits into functional batteries.

Chemistry and Biological Sciences collaborated on an outreach event with OLDS Elementary School in Raleigh, that went on from November 2023 to January 2024.

The program “Partnering for the Advancement of Science Education and Learning” or “PASEL” is one where NC State volunteers mentor 20-30 3-5 graders in the design, execution, and presentation of science fair projects. This ~8-week program walks the students through the scientific method, allows for hands-on experimentation, and involves researching support and justification of conclusions drawn. One of the teams was even selected as a finalist to move on to the regional science fair!

  • NC State program leaders: Joshua Pierce (Chemistry) and Chris Halweg (Biological Sciences)
  • OLDS program leader: Leanne Stradling
  • NC State student volunteers from Chemistry: Allie Guerra, Jamie Breunig, Mabel Barreiro Carpio, Haley Smith, Cassidy Oliverio, Catherine Odhiambo, Kathy Nguyen, Tony Kelly, Ethan Pozy, Ty Johnson, Skylar Harrelson, Mahdis Fallahi
  • NC State faculty volunteers:
    • Emily Griffith, Statistics
    • Lincoln Larson, Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management
Explosive soda is a classic yet thrilling experiment! Allie and her class of talented 3rd Graders are putting the finishing touches on their poster. Science can be fun, engaging, and ‘explosive.’
Join our little scientist and experience a real-time volcano eruption! A 3rd grader showcasing the magic of acid-base reactions in rainbow colors.
Dive into the ooey-gooey adventure of science! Kathy and a 3rd grader dive into polymer chemistry with one glob of colorful slime at a time.
