Chemist Ohata, 2024-25 Goodnight Early Career Innovator

Dr. Jun Ohata
Assistant Professor of Chemistry
NC State University

Prof. Jun Ohata, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, has been recently recognized with the Goodnight Early Innovators award.

The Goodnight Early Career Innovators program recognizes and rewards promising NC State early-career faculty whose scholarship is in STEM or STEM education. Nominees are recommended by their colleges and selected by a committee of distinguished faculty across the STEM disciplines at NC State.

The Ohata group is an organic chemistry research laboratory examining the reactivity of peptides and proteins in nonaqueous environments (namely, conditions without much water) for:

  • Therapeutic applications such as antibody–drug conjugates that are increasingly used for cancer treatments with less side effects and
  • Investigation of the chemical origin of biomolecules in abiotic worlds where cells and enzymes are not present.

The team’s goal is not only to realize cutting-edge research but also effective education and mentorship, where organic chemistry is the central core to create inclusive environments and enrich active learning by binding people and research together.
