Meet Mattie Webb
Celebrating the International Housekeepers and Environmental Services Week - 2021
Held every year during the second full week of September (12th-18th in 2021), International Housekeepers and Environmental Services Week is a week dedicated to recognizing the efforts of hard-working custodial staff members. The department of Chemistry celebrates the housekeeping staff overlooking the Dabney, Cox, and Fox halls every year in September.
For the occasion, let’s meet an exceptional person who, during the pandemic and long before that, strived to keep our facilities clean and safe for those who work, visit, and live there. The departmental Communications Committee chatted with Mattie Webb, a hard-working yet very funny and charismatic member of the University Housekeeping.
Mattie Webb has been working at NC State for six years now. She is currently serving as the A5 Zone Manager after being promoted in 2019. The Zone she manages includes Hillsborough Building, Bureau of Mines, Cox Hall, Dabney Hall, Gardner Hall, Scott Hall, and Williams Hall.
As a Zone Manager, Mattie works hard to implement the University Housekeeping Mission Statement, “To provide a clean, healthy, and safe environment for students, staff, faculty, and visitors. Our staff will communicate with professionalism, utilize environmentally friendly products and meet the University’s needs.”
When asked about her job, Mattie mentioned that she strongly focuses on customer service. Her ultimate goal would be to provide cleanliness and safety to the campus community as per the University standards while making sure that the employees she supervises stay safe and healthy.
Sometimes, it has been challenging to keep it going, certainly more during the pandemic. There have been difficult times when Mattie was challenged by a shortage of staff members while keeping up with the complexity of cleaning and sanitizing according to the new protocols. However, her main concern was always to watch her employees’ safety and to make sure that they stay at home when they feel sick.
This is Mattie! It was a pleasure to get to know her better and spend some time with her. She really is an exceptional person!
On the other hand, Mattie loves and is very dedicated to her job. When asked about what she liked least about it, she laughed and understandably said: “ Waking up every day at 2:30 am… I have never been a morning person.”
Replying to further questions, Mattie described herself as being a Funny and Compassionate Giver, and would, beyond doubt, spend her dream vacation visiting the Greek islands, if money and time were not an issue.
