About the Speaker:

Dr.Benny Chan is a Professor and Chemistry Department Chair at The College of New Jersey. He earned his Ph.D. from Penn State University and continued his training as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Colorado State University and Los Alamos National Laboratory. He joined the faculty at TCNJ in 2006. He is an American Chemical Society Fellow and has been recognized by The National Organization of Gay and Lesbian Scientists and Technical Professionals as Educator of the Year in 2019. Dr. Chan’s research interests include the synthesis and characterization of inorganic materials with potential applications in nanotechnology, thermoelectrics, batteries, and catalysis.

Title:

Novel aminoquinoline sulfonamide coordination compounds with interesting redox properties

Abstract:

The inorganic chemistry laboratory curriculum was transformed to include a CURE (course-based undergraduate research experience) to create equity in research experiences at The College of New Jersey.  Through a discovery-based strategy, students were able to find new avenues of study which led to new directions in the research group.  Students discovered an aminoquinoline sulfonamide based chelating system.  Based on the literature, they proposed, hypothesized, and synthesized a p-nitrobenzene ligand analog to prepare novel coordination complexes.  The work led to an extensive project studying the first row transition metal and rare earth chelation of these ligand systems.  The seminar will describe the first row transition metal complexes including structural changes through the series and interesting redox properties that demonstrate the ligand was not so innocent.
