SUMMARY:Analytical Chemistry Seminar Series - Haitao Liu\, University of Pittsburgh
DESCRIPTION:About the Seminar\nTitle\nIntrinsic surface properties of graphitic carbon materials \nAbstract\nGraphitic carbon materials are long considered hydrophobic. However\, our recent research shows that the hydrophobicity arises from the adsorption of airborne hydrocarbons on their surfaces. Additionally\, this form of contamination significantly influences both the heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant and the double-layer capacitance of carbon electrodes. These findings underscore the critical role of surface cleanliness in characterizing and utilizing carbon materials in ambient conditions. \nAbout the Speaker\nACADEMIC APPOINTMENTS\n2020- Professor of Chemistry\, University of Pittsburgh – Pittsburgh\, PA\n2023- Chair\, Department of Chemistry\n2021-2023 Director of Graduate Studies\, Department of Chemistry\n2016-2020 Associate Professor\, University of Pittsburgh – Pittsburgh\, PA\n2010-2016 Assistant Professor\, University of Pittsburgh – Pittsburgh\, PA\n2017-2021 Guest Professor\, Shanxi University\, Taiyuan\, China\n2019-2020 Guest Professor\, Shanghai Institute of Technology\, Shanghai\, China \nRESEARCH\nResearch in our group focuses on the interfacial properties of carbon and DNA materials\, motivated by their applications in energy storage and nanofabrication\, respectively. Our current research has two main thrusts: (1) Intrinsic interfacial properties of carbon materials. We discovered that many surface properties of carbon materials\, although previously thought to be intrinsic\, were in fact limited by unintentional surface contamination from the environment. This work has significantly changed the way the community views and handles carbon materials. (2) DNA-based nanofabrication. We have developed new chemistry to pattern a wide range of substrates using DNA nanostructure templates. This work has established DNA-based lithography as a promising alternative to photolithography for high resolution\, low cost patterning.

SUMMARY:Analytical Chemistry Seminar Series - Amanda Patrick\, Mississippi State University
DESCRIPTION:Educational Background\nB.S.\, North Carolina State University\, 2011\nPh.D.\, University of Florida\, 2016 \nResearch\nThe research in our laboratory focuses on applying mass spectrometry\, ion mobility spectrometry\, and infrared ion spectroscopy to learn fundamental properties of various types of ions and clusters. These properties include ionization\, clustering\, and dissociation. We are especially interested in molecular systems with high societal importance\, thus our research focuses on three application areas: (1) next-generation ionic liquid-based spacecraft propellants\, (2) modified amino acids and peptides\, and (3) performance-enhancing drugs.
