DESCRIPTION:About the Speaker:\nBio:\nElias Rosen is an Associate Professor in the Division of Pharmacotherapy and Experimental Therapeutics at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. \nResearch:\nElias Rosen’s research focuses on the development of methods to measure intracellular distribution of therapeutics and their metabolites in a variety of biological matrices using mass spectrometry imaging. He is currently quantifying the penetration of drugs relevant to HIV treatment and eradication into putative viral reservoirs\, and combining this approach with traditional imaging modalities to evaluate efficacy of experimental treatment regimens.

DESCRIPTION:About the Speaker:\nBio:\nJames McCord is a research chemist focused on high-resolution mass spectrometry methods development and the elucidation of emerging chemical pollutants\, with a particular focus on per- and polyfluoroakyl substances (PFAS). James began work in mass spectrometry during his Ph.D. at North Carolina State University and for the last seven years has worked in the Center for Environmental Measurement and Modeling at the US EPA\, where he collaborates with state and federal agencies across the country using non-targeted analysis to investigate sites of chemical pollution\, monitor cleanup activities\, and expand traditional monitoring methods to emerging contaminants. Within BP4NTA\, James has contributed to the committees on stakeholder outreach\, standard methods & materials\, and PFAS topics\, with numerous products in the release pipeline. His research goals and vision for BP4NTA are aligned in a desire for standardized\, reproducible methods for conducting non-targeted analysis to support risk assessment and decision making for environmental and public health bodies.

Her thesis work focused on the development of mass spectrometric and bioinformatic strategies to predict and identify neuropeptides. \nCurrently\, Amanda is a Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry and a Member of the Molecular Carcinogenesis and Chemoprevention group in the Comprehensive Cancer Center at The Ohio State University. She is also the Co-Director of the Proteomics Shared Resource for the OSU Cancer Center. \nResearch:\nOur research interests lie at the intersection of analytical chemistry and chemical biology\, with a focus on cancer biology. Cancer is a complex disease\, requiring sophisticated and systematic strategies to deliver knowledge that will lead to improved treatment options for patients. Individuals trained in a wide range of scientific topics and possessing a substantial breadth of knowledge are best positioned to tackle this challenge. In the Hummon Research Group\, we develop analytical methods to evaluate both the proteome and metabolome in cancer cells\, while exploring the deregulation in cancer-associated signal transduction pathways.

Bereman Distinguished Lecture in Analytical Chemistry\nAbout the Speaker:\nBio:\nDr. Yates and his lab’s indelible contributions to the field of proteomics have been recognized since 1987 with over 1\,000 publications and over 160\,000 citations according to Google Scholar. John received his B.A. of Zoology and M.S. of Chemistry at University of Maine\, 1980 & 1983\, followed quickly by his Ph.D of Chemistry at University of Virginia\, 1987. He is recognized as the Ernest W. Hahn Professor of the Departments of Molecular Medicine and Neurobiology. \nJohn has been a professor of Chemistry and Molecular Medicine at Scripps Research Institute since 2007 and has lectured for the following institutions & organizations:\nDiversa Inc\, Torrey Mesa Research Institute\, University of Washington\, California Institute of Technology\, Catholic University of America\, and University of Virginia. \nA few of John’s awards include the title of Ernest W. Hahn Professor at Scripps Research Institute\, the HUPO Award in Discovery (2017) and in Proteomics (2005)\, Michael Gross Lecture from University of Nebraska (2022) among many more over the years. \nResearch Interests:\nThe Yates Lab focuses on Proteomics\, the study of the structure and function of proteins\, including how they interact with each other inside cells. This allows us to deeply investigate viruses such as HIV and SARS-CoV-2 and to measure the impact of drugs intended to ameliorate health. \nThe past 30 years have seen amazing advances in mass spectrometry-based proteomics technologies and their use in a broad range of biological applications. While mass spectrometry is a well-established and indispensable tool for proteomics\, the Yates lab continues to strive to improve MS performance for proteomics applications and to innovate techniques that expand the scope of biological questions that can be addressed by MS.

DESCRIPTION:About the Speaker:\nBio:\nDr. Heather Desaire is currently a Dean’s Professor and Keith D. Wilner Chair in Chemistry at the University of Kansas. Her research interests span the fields of glycobiology\, mass spectrometry\, and machine learning. She received her Ph.D. from the University of California\, Berkeley\, and a BA in Chemistry from Grinnell College\, Grinnell\, IA. \nResearch:\nResearch in the Desaire group focuses on using mass spectrometry to study a variety of molecules\, from large glycoproteins to simple bi-functional organic molecules. Structural information about the molecules is obtained using tandem mass spectrometry. In a tandem mass spectrometry experiment\, the compound of interest is isolated inside the mass spectrometer; then\, in a second step\, it is fragmented. When the fragments are detected\, a significant amount of structural information about the original compound is obtained. This technique can be used to characterize glycosylated proteins and small organic molecules\, including pharmaceuticals.
